on Yoga Stuff - Mats
Whether you are beginner, intermediate or advanced student of yoga, at some point in your practice including conscious props can be a natural and gradual way to enhance your practice or deepen a pose. Our studios use the HOME Grown Collection for products we can outsource locally. The products generally do cost more, as the cost of raw materials is more expensive, especially when working with fair trade, thinking sustainable, and organic when possible. All these aspects impact the end selling price for consciously made products. Our studios support local industry and independent artists and crafters who work to keep the dying arts alive. Of course recycled products when possible are a favorite as well.
If money really does talk, then spending your purchasing dollars on products that work with mother nature – not against should be a priority. Before purchasing any yoga prop we suggest taking the extra time to find an appropriate product review. Where is the product made? Is it safe for humans and the environment? Does the business support sustainable solutions? Although mats are optional, depending on the environment and your knees, you may want to invest in a yoga mat early in your yoga practice.
However, we do not suggest running out to your favorite department store any purchasing “any” mat just because it is the inexpensive. There is always a bit of due diligence necessary prior to making any informed purchase, so don’t forget to do research about product and company. Remember, now that you are doing yoga, it is perfectly acceptable to care about your environment and no one will ever mock you for wanting to hug a tree. For indoor settings look for a mat that gives safe feet and hand traction on multiple surfaces.
Here is a list of a few of our favorite things:

Mission Green
Manduka PRO series yoga mats, designed to last a lifetime (or two), curb the amount of PVC mats that enter landfills every year and reduces overall mat consumption. Also, during the manufacturing of most PVC products, toxic emissions may be released into the air. However, PRO series mats are manufactured through a process that ensures no toxic emissions are released into the atmosphere. The PRO series mats are certified safe for human contact by OEKO-TEX, an environmental certification agency in Europe for the textile industry.
Use & Care
To Store: Roll your Manduka PRO - Limited Edition with the top side (fabric-like finish) facing outwards. This keeps the corners of the mat flat during practice.
To Break In: The surface texture of the Manduka PRO - Limited Edition will improve with use. Our customers have found that the best way to “break in” their mat is to use it on a daily basis. Another trick is to sprinkle coarse sea salt over your mat, scrub it down with a sponge, and air dry in the sunshine.
To Clean: We recommend using Manduka Mat Renew or any non-solvent household cleaner and a damp cloth or sponge. Hang to dry in the sunshine. DO NOT put your mat in the washing machine- it may break the machine and ruin your mat!
